In the days leading up to Christmas, a strange and heartbreaking sight began to haunt the streets of Irvington, New Jersey. It was a creature that looked like something from a surreal nightmare—a stumbling, fluffy animal, its head completely obscured by a glass jar. At first, residents weren’t even sure what they were looking at. But as they got closer, they realized with a jolt of horror that it was a cat, and she was in a desperate, life-threatening predicament.
The glass jar, likely discarded as trash, had become a cruel and suffocating prison. The poor cat, in a moment of hunger or curiosity, must have stuck her head inside to get a last morsel of food, only for it to become hopelessly stuck. Now, she was blind, deaf to the world outside the echoing confines of the jar, and unable to eat or drink. She was a ghost in a glass mask, stumbling through a world she could no longer see, her time rapidly running out.
A wave of compassion and urgency spread through the neighborhood. For days, concerned residents and local rescuers, including Marcia Sandford Fishkind and Eileen DiNicola, tried to catch the terrified cat. But she was scared and disoriented, and their desperate attempts to help only sent her fleeing into hiding. The community’s hope began to turn to desperation as they realized they were watching a slow-motion tragedy unfold.
A Christmas Day Rescue Mission
As the days passed, the community turned to a new strategy. They began tagging a renowned local animal rescue expert, John Debacker, in a flurry of Facebook posts. Debacker was known for his skill and fearlessness in handling the most difficult rescue cases. The pleas grew more urgent: “Please, can you help this cat?”
Finally, on Christmas Day, as Debacker was settling in to celebrate the holiday with his family, he saw the urgent messages. He didn’t hesitate. He abandoned his holiday plans, knowing that for the cat in the jar, this was not a day of celebration, but a race against time. He headed straight for the scene, a Christmas angel on a mission of mercy.
“I was in [New Jersey] for Christmas when I got the call that the cat was in sight,” Debacker later told The Dodo. He arrived to find a tense but hopeful scene. The cat had been spotted in a cluttered, junk-filled yard. This was their chance, and it might be their last.
A Gentle Hand and a Moment of Freedom
With the cat in view, the rescue became a delicate and suspenseful operation. The yard was a maze of obstacles, and the cat was perched precariously, ready to bolt at the slightest sound. As the other rescuers held their breath, Debacker scaled a chain-link fence, his movements slow and deliberate.
“John climbed over the fence and onto the junk so quietly and gingerly, as to not scare her away,” DiNicola wrote in a Facebook post, describing the heart-stopping moment. He moved with the patience of a predator, but with the heart of a savior. With a final, swift and gentle movement, he scruffed the cat and secured her safely in a carrier. The chase was finally over. She was safe.
Now came the most crucial part. Inside the carrier, Debacker worked to free her from her glass prison. “I slowly twisted it off her head… so as to not injure her,” he said. And in that moment, the cat, who had been so terrified and elusive, seemed to understand that she was being helped. “She didn’t resist at all.”
With a final, soft pop, the jar came off. For the first time in days, the cat could breathe fresh air. She could see the faces of the people who had saved her. She could feel a gentle, reassuring touch. She was free.
A Bright Future for Merry
The rescuers, in a nod to the holiday on which she was saved, named the sweet, resilient cat Merry. She was immediately transported to the Brick City Kitties Rescue, Inc., where she could finally receive the medical attention she so desperately needed.
Despite her terrifying ordeal, the carers at the rescue quickly discovered that Merry was not a feral, untamable creature. She was a friendly, affectionate cat who had simply been through an unimaginable trauma. She quickly warmed up to her new caregivers, her purrs a quiet thank you for their kindness.
Now, thanks to the compassion of an entire community—from the neighbors who never gave up, to the local rescuers who tried for days, to the expert who gave up his Christmas to save her—Merry’s future is no longer a question. It is a bright and hopeful promise. She has been declared ready for adoption, a sweet and gentle soul just waiting for a quiet, loving home where the only thing she will ever have to worry about again is which sunny spot to nap in. Her story is a powerful reminder of what is possible when a community refuses to look away.
