Instead of wandering off, Raymond stayed right where they left him. For five endless days, the loyal dog planted himself on a small pile of wood chips near the trailhead. When strangers tried to get close, Raymond bolted into the woods, only to circle back to his watch post a short time later. A Rescue Mission of Patience and Trust
One woman who frequented the trail couldn’t bear to see Raymond like that. She made several attempts to coax him into safety but quickly realized that his fear was too strong. He would not come near anyone.
Knowing he needed professional help, she reached out to The KG Foundation, an animal rescue group experienced in saving frightened dogs. Founder Jordan Covington responded right away, ready to commit to a rescue that might take days.
Covington arrived with food, traps, and endless patience. But when she finally sat quietly and held out a bit of food for Raymond, something shifted. The starving, exhausted dog slowly walked toward her. For the first time in nearly a week, Raymond allowed someone close.
“He just came right up and took the food,” Covington later explained. “It was like he had finally run out of hope waiting for his family, and he knew it was time to accept help.”
In that moment, Raymond’s days of waiting alone in the cold and hunger came to an end.
First Signs of Joy After Heartbreak
After a short stay at animal control to confirm no one was looking for him, Raymond was transferred to a safe space at A ReJoyceful Animal Rescue, supported by Covington’s foundation.
At first, he was timid, still carrying the emotional weight of abandonment. But then something remarkable happened. When Raymond spotted another dog, his tail began to wag. For a pup who had spent days frozen in sadness, that little wag was a powerful symbol of hope.
“It was the first time I saw his butt wiggle,” Covington recalled. “I thought, ‘Oh my gosh, thank God. He’s still in there. He’s still got life in him.’”
It was a small gesture, but it revealed that Raymond had not been broken completely by betrayal. Deep inside, he still had the ability to feel joy.
Unfortunately, just as his healing journey was beginning, Raymond developed a severe case of pneumonia. He was rushed to a veterinary hospital, placed on oxygen, and closely monitored. His rescuers feared the worst — but Raymond’s resilience surprised them again. Slowly, with treatment and rest, he began to recover.
And then came another breakthrough: Raymond picked up a toy. For the first time since being rescued, he played.
A Sensitive Soul Ready for a New Chapter
Today, Raymond is still under the watchful care of his rescue team. He is learning that people can be kind, that meals will come regularly, and that hands reaching out are meant to comfort, not abandon. He’s meeting new people with bravery, wagging his tail often, and even showing a spark of playfulness.
Soon, Raymond will be available for fostering — and once he has fully healed, he will be ready for adoption. His rescuers believe that whoever opens their home to him will find a gentle, sensitive soul who craves stability and love.
“I think he’s going to be such a sweet guy,” Covington said. “He’s sensitive, but that’s what makes him so special. He deserves someone who will never give up on him again.”
For now, Raymond continues to rest, recover, and grow stronger each day. The dog who once sat on a pile of wood chips waiting for people who would never return is finally discovering what it feels like to belong.
Raymond’s story is a reminder of the heartbreak too many abandoned animals face — but also of the resilience and hope they carry within them. With patience, kindness, and love, even the most broken spirits can wag their tails again.
