When an electrician arrived at an abandoned house in Detroit to carry out some work, he wasn’t expecting to find company. But as he moved through the property, he caught sight of two pairs of wide, cautious eyes staring at him from the backyard.
Curious and concerned, he stepped closer and quickly realized what he was looking at — two young puppies huddled together. One appeared to be limping, while the other stayed protectively by their friend’s side. With no owner in sight and no reason to be living at a deserted house, it was clear these dogs were on their own.
The electrician knew he couldn’t just leave them there. So, without hesitation, he picked up the phone and called Detroit Pit Crew Dog Rescue, an organization known for helping stray and abandoned dogs in the area.
Rescue Mission: Winning Over Mercy And Grace
Theresa Sumpter, founder and executive director of Detroit Pit Crew Dog Rescue, immediately responded to the call. She drove straight to the scene, determined to bring the frightened pups to safety.
When she arrived, the puppies were wary of her presence. They lingered near the edges of the yard, keeping their distance from this new human. Their hesitation was obvious, but Sumpter wasn’t discouraged. Armed with patience, kind words, and a few irresistible treats, she began the delicate process of gaining their trust.
“It felt amazing to rescue them as I wasn’t sure if I would be able to secure them both as they were very hesitant and cautious to [approach] me at first,” Sumpter later explained. “I was able to win them over with some sweet talk and tasty treats.”
After nearly half an hour of persistence, the breakthrough came. One by one, she carefully coaxed them close enough to scoop them up safely. Relief washed over her as she secured the pair in a crate and headed for the vet.
A New Chapter Of Healing And Hope
The two pups were given names that matched the spirit of their story: Mercy and Grace. At first, both were extremely timid, retreating from new people and environments. Understandably, life at an abandoned property had left them unsure of who to trust.
But with medical care, proper nutrition, and gentle encouragement, things began to change. Mercy and Grace slowly started wagging their tails and showing curiosity instead of fear. Staff and volunteers celebrated each small milestone — the first time they accepted pets without pulling away, the first time they leaned in for cuddles, the first time their shy eyes lit up with playfulness.
Within just two weeks, the transformation was undeniable. “They have both come out of their shells and are doing amazing,” Sumpter said proudly.
Ready For Forever Homes
Today, Mercy and Grace are no longer the scared, fragile puppies discovered in the backyard of an abandoned house. They are healthy, full of energy, and eager for affection. Most importantly, they are safe.
The once-forgotten pups now have the chance to find families who will give them the love and stability they always deserved. For the electrician who stumbled upon them, and for the rescue team that stepped in, the outcome couldn’t be more rewarding.
What began as an ordinary workday turned into a life-saving mission — and thanks to quick action and compassion, Mercy and Grace’s story will continue in homes filled with warmth, safety, and care.
