A Second Chance at Life Though shelters in New York are at capacity, this rescue brought out the resilience of the animal welfare community. The ACC has even waived adoption fees for dogs over 40 pounds in hopes of easing the overcrowding and finding homes for dogs like Sammie and Gracie. The road ahead for these Malinois is not easy. They must learn how to walk on leashes, navigate new environments, and trust humans again. But they are no longer hidden in a dark apartment — they are safe, loved, and slowly stepping into the lives they deserve. A New Chapter Of Healing And Hope The two pups were given names that matched the spirit of their story: Mercy and Grace. At first, both were extremely timid, retreating from new people and environments. Understandably, life at an abandoned property had left them unsure of who to trust. But with medical care, proper nutrition, and gentle encouragement, things began to change. Mercy and Grace slowly started wagging their tails and showing curiosity instead of fear. Staff and volunteers celebrated each small milestone — the first time they accepted pets without pulling away, the first time they leaned in for cuddles, the first time their shy eyes lit up with playfulness. Within just two weeks, the transformation was undeniable. “They have both come out of their shells and are doing amazing,” Sumpter said proudly. As soon as rescuers approached, she curled into a ball — a natural instinct that left only her sharp quills visible inside the narrow jar. Pulling her out by force could have caused injury, so the team needed to think creatively. The team made sure she was warm, comfortable, and had plenty of food and water to help her regain her strength. Their new patient quickly won the hearts of everyone caring for her. However, during her medical checkup, staff discovered that she was battling endoparasites. This meant she couldn’t return to the wild immediately. For now, she is undergoing treatment and gaining strength each day in the care of her rescuers. Although the team looks forward to releasing her when she’s healthy, they admit they’ll miss her sweet presence. Until then, they continue to cheer her on, reminding her that once she’s back in the wild, glass jars — especially ones once filled with Nutella — are strictly off-limits. A Lesson For Everyone About Wildlife Safety Her unusual rescue has also highlighted a broader issue: discarded food containers can pose a serious danger to wildlife. Animals often crawl inside to lick out the last bits of food but become trapped, unable to escape. During the search, Smith discovered the kittens’ mother — a stray calico she recognized from her neighborhood. Working with rescuers, she ensured the mama cat was safely spayed and released back into her territory. A Happy Ending for All Eventually, it was time for Rubble, Biggie, and Mr. Spicy to leave for a foster home. Saying goodbye was bittersweet, but Smith found comfort knowing they would grow up safe and loved. Still, her heart ached for the fourth kitten. Then, weeks later, a miracle happened.
