When Alice Ensor, an adoption counselor at Muttville Senior Dog Rescue, opened a new adoption application in 2021, she expected the usual details — information about a prospective adopter’s home, lifestyle, and readiness to care for a senior dog. But this application was anything but ordinary.
It was from Johanna, a woman preparing to celebrate her 101st birthday.
“When I first received Johanna’s adoption questionnaire, I was a bit surprised,” Ensor admitted. “One hundred years old is definitely a milestone in and of itself. We don’t often have a centenarian looking to bring home a new mutt. I knew that Johanna had to be a very special dog lover to be looking for her new furry friend.”
Instead of skepticism, Ensor and the team at Muttville were intrigued. The detailed application revealed Johanna had a strong support system. She lived with the help of a caretaker, and her daughter Debbie was deeply involved in her life. Together, they would ensure any dog Johanna adopted would have all the care, love, and security he needed.

The team arranged a virtual meet-and-greet so Johanna could see Gnocchi in a comfortable home setting. The moment she laid eyes on him, her face lit up.

The adoption process moved quickly. With Debbie’s help, Gnocchi was soon on his way to his new life. When he finally arrived at Johanna’s home, he wasted no time in making his feelings clear.
“He walked into the house and jumped right into Johanna’s lap,” Ensor said.

From that day forward, Gnocchi — renamed Gucci by his adoring new mom — settled into his forever home as though he had always belonged. The shy, overlooked dog became Johanna’s loyal shadow, her constant source of comfort and joy.
Johanna, who was turning 101 at the time, felt her world brighten instantly. “It’s been an amazing year with Gucci,” she later told Muttville. “He brings me so much joy! I love it when he sits on my lap and keeps me company. Having Gucci in my life has given me someone to love and care for, and that makes a big difference at my age.”

Gucci is a self-declared couch potato, which makes him the perfect match for Johanna’s slower-paced lifestyle. In the afternoons, her caretaker takes Gucci out for his daily walks, ensuring he gets the exercise and enrichment he needs.
“They are thick as thieves,” said Debbie, Johanna’s daughter. “He is spoiled rotten! He’s a couch potato who was a perfect match for my mom!”
