Four Long Years of Waiting for a Chance
When Elle first arrived at Austin Pets Alive! (APA!), she was a young, nervous pup who had already experienced instability in her short life. She came from the local city shelter, Austin Animal Center, and while her future looked uncertain, her new caregivers at APA! were determined to help her find the loving home she deserved.
But what no one could have imagined was just how long Elle’s wait would be.
Days turned into weeks, weeks stretched into months, and before long, years had passed. By the time Elle’s story began to change, she had spent more than 1,400 days — nearly four years — living inside the shelter.
Despite her anxiety and shyness, Elle slowly began to trust the people around her. Once she formed a bond, she was affectionate, playful, and deeply loyal. Her closest human friend at the shelter, Kaitlan Warmbrod, the dog behavior training supervisor, remembers how quickly Elle stole her heart.
“When I met her for the first time, I had just started working here,” Warmbrod recalled. “We played fetch together, and when I went to leave, she crawled right into my lap. For a dog who usually took time to trust new people, it was like she had chosen me. I couldn’t understand how a dog like her could stay here so long.”
And yet, the days kept adding up. Elle’s friends never stopped promoting her, sharing her story online, and introducing her to potential adopters. Still, time and time again, she was overlooked.
A New Friend Steps In
Elle’s life finally began to change when a man named John came across her story on social media. Like so many others, he saw her nervous eyes and shy smile, but unlike everyone else, he didn’t scroll past. Instead, his heart broke for her.
John had experience with anxious dogs before, and something about Elle spoke to him. He understood what it was like for a dog to need patience, gentle reassurance, and consistency. He decided he wanted to foster her.
Instead of rushing the process, John took his time. He scheduled several visits, meeting Elle again and again, allowing her to slowly grow comfortable with him. So they threw her a goodbye party.

The highlight of the party was a cake made just for her — a big, dog-friendly treat slathered with peanut butter. Elle devoured it with glee, her eyes lighting up as everyone cheered her on. A Forever Kind of Love
When the party ended, Elle left the shelter doors with John, her new foster dad. For a dog who had known nothing but shelter life for years, the adjustment could have been overwhelming — but Elle surprised everyone.
“She settled in faster than we expected,” Warmbrod shared. “She clicked with John almost instantly. It was like she knew he was her person.”
Now in a home environment, Elle is blossoming. She spends her days exploring her new surroundings, cuddling with John, and learning what it feels like to truly belong. Every tail wag, every nap on a soft bed, and every happy glance at her new dad is proof that she is finally living the life she deserved all along.
And the best part? John has already decided he doesn’t want to say goodbye. Though he began as a foster parent, he is now on the foster-to-adopt track, preparing to make Elle officially part of his family forever.
For Elle’s friends at APA!, her story is a reminder that no dog is ever forgotten, no matter how long it takes.
“The time and effort we pour into each dog is worth it,” Warmbrod said. “Every single one deserves their chance. Elle’s wait was long, but in the end, it brought her to the right person.”
